Amazon Fire TV Review
What is Amazon Fire TV? Some may be under the impression that this device is solely for Amazon Prime. While that is an option, it is far from the only one!
Amazon Fire TV is a set-top media streaming device that offers all the top names in internet regardless of whether you have an Amazon Prime account or not.
Comparatively speaking, how does the Amazon Fire TV device stack up against similar devices on the market? This Amazon Fire TV review will guide you to make an informed decision.
1.) Processing Speed
If you could lift the hood of the Amazon Fire TV media player, what would you find? The first impressive piece inside this little box is the processor; Amazon has included a nice quad core 1.7 GHZ processor.
What does this mean exactly? Well, for starters, it means smoother streaming and faster processing of information, which is aided even further by the 320 graphics engine and the available memory, (2 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage).
Why do you care if a media streaming device is fast when it comes to browsing movies and other content?
For people who have never used a media streaming box it may not make a lot of sense, but for those of us who have struggled with sluggish navigation and playback issues, it makes perfect sense!
2.) Outputs and Inputs
Amazon Fire TV media streaming device has many of the same inputs and outputs you’ll find on comparable equipment. For example:
- HDMI 1.4b output.
- 5.5 mm DC jack.
- Optical Audio.
- 2.0 USB.
- 10/100 Ethernet.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (not technically physical inputs or outputs but important just the same).
If you use modern technology, you’ll be familiar with some if not all of these ports, they’re similar to what you’ll find on your typical laptop, DVD, Blu-Ray player and television sets.
According to other Amazon Fire TV reviews, one output a lot of people may not be as familiar with is the optical audio even though it has been an option on a variety of devices for several years.
If you get the chance to use this for your audio, you’ll definitely not be disappointed.
3.) Media Options
So, what can you watch with your Amazon Fire TV device? The big players are represented of course, Netflix, Hulu and Pandora. You’ll also be happy to find HBO GO, Showtime Anytime, PBS Kids and much more are available as well.
It should be understood that some programming such as, HBO GO and Amazon Prime require separate subscriptions for access. (It has been noted that your service provider can limit access to premium services like HBO GO, check with your cable or satellite provider).
Personal images and videos can likewise be viewed right on your television screen if you have uploaded them to Amazon Cloud. Would you like to share your vacation or holiday videos at the next family get together? Not a problem!
4.) Gaming (Including Minecraft)
Game systems have been offering movies, television and music for the last few years, so it is only fitting that the media streaming players including Amazon Fire TV return the favor.
Now, you’ll not have access to a full library of PlayStation, Xbox or Wii video games with the Amazon Fire TV media-streaming box, but you can enjoy popular titles such as Minecraft Pocket edition, Sonic 2 the Hedgehog, GTA III and several more.
It should be noted that you would need to purchase the Amazon Fire TV compatible gaming controller separately.
5.) Voice Search
What is Amazon Fire TV’s true claim to fame? Well, you’ll not only be impressed with speed but you’ll also be impressed with its voice options. Yes, you can search for your favorite media via included voice recognition software.
Instead of scrolling endlessly or typing in search boxes, you simply tell your box (Amazon Fire TV voice search) what you’re searching for.
Note that this works primarily with Amazon products but has begun to include several third party applications as well.
6.) Parents Choice
Maybe one of the most interesting things we discovered when researching this Amazon Fire TV review was a little option called Free Time.
This feature allows parents to set up profiles for up to four children that incorporate parental controls. Now your child can log on and watch to their hearts content, but only the media you approve.
Amazon Fire TV’s Free Time feature makes it possible for you as a parent to limit your child’s screen viewing time.
This is a subscription based service as well as an application, but the fees are nominal at $2.99 per month and gives your children access to content from Nickelodeon, PBS, Sesame Street and much more. More apps and games for Free Time unlimited are in the works and will be arriving soon.
Amazon Fire TV Reviews, Comments from Customers
What do the people have to say? There are not shortages of Amazon Fire TV reviews, and the majority of these reviews are positive. Here are just a few things current customers have to say about this media streaming player device.
Typical Middle Aged Woman (her description not ours!): Easy to set up and provides a simple to use interface. We enjoy the bounty of free broadcasts as well as the rental options.
Game Changer: Very impressed and according to the wife, we will be switching out our Roku 3 media streaming player very soon for Amazon Fire TV.

Two impressive features are speed and voice search is amazing.
One Flaw- device works very well and I am very impressed with video quality and the options. It would have been nice to be able to sort results to Amazon Prime only, instead of having to go through Prime and Pay titles (Amazon has since fixed this problem).
This is Amazon’s first foray into the media streaming device market and by all reports, they’re holding their own against the top names in the market.
The good news is along with all the current features and options you see here there is also a consistent pattern of updating being provided by Amazon.
Will Amazon Fire TV really be the game changer some reviewers are calling it? That remains to be seen and in honesty will vary a bit from one user to the next.
After all, not everyone is concerned with parental controls. It is a very good showing and apparently, Amazon Fire TV is giving Roku (a long time player) a run for their money.
